MORGAN MINIATURES UP FOR AUCTION IN LONDON
London, June 391,
for the
Subsrentiat
im that Landon is the centre of the world's anetion market for works of art was forthcoming this week when the sales of art treasures in Landon auction
reached rooms the record total of £200,000,
AL Mrs. Christie's famous rooms, the sales during the week totalled £112,000.
of this amoont £70,000 WIS realised for Mr. J. Pierpont Mor- gan's famous collection of minia- tures formed by his father, the American financier. The collection totalled approximately 800 minin- fares, dating from the sixteenth to 1 the nineteenth century.
Two of the principal itents, valu- ed at £8,000, were acquired for the British National Museum. Oni was the "Armada Jewel," which is sail to have been presented by Queen Elizabeth to one of her statesmen after the defeat of the Armada. It is believed to have been given by Queen Elizabeth to the Lord Privy Seal; but it is more likely to have been the one pre- sented by her to Sir Francis Wal- singham who was intimately asso- ciated with the preparations against the Armada. The orna- ment was purchased by Pierpont Morgan for £5,250 at Christie's, where it was put up for auction as "the property of a Gentleman" in 1902.
In addition to the Morgan col- lection, Christie's last week sold many other rare objects d'art. anel Lother Yesterday enamels works of art produced £18,000,
Rare stamps were also respon- changing sible for mich money hands luring the week, one collec- tion sold in Bond Street fetching £10,000,
Many net collections from abroad are finding their way to London auction rooms, and several other important sales are pending. --British Wireless,
