the West's opening lead was queen of diamonds. Now when the hand goes down, it looks' us if Bank wouhl have to bose a dia- mond, a club, and a spude unless the spade suit could be established. If the spades were divided three- two, one spade trick could be given up and the losing diamond and i club discarded on the long spades. However. Bank could see that he was confronted with the problem of re-entries.

The first diamond trick was won' in dummy with the nee. The ace and king of trumps were eashed immediately. Now, the declarer could not return to his hand with n diamond because, when he gave up his spade trick, the opponenta could eash a diamond trick and defent the contract. So the whole problem resolved around how to play the spade suit.

Would you play to cash the ace and king of spades and lead the third round of spades? If you do, your contract will be defeated, because Eust will ruff in on the third spade and immediately lend back a club, which you will be forced to win in the dummy with the ace.

Now while your spade suit Is! established, it will be of no valuc to you, as you haven't picked. up the trump.

On this particular hand, declarer decided that, as long as he must lose a spade trick, ho would lose it right away and conserve his entries. So a small spade was led from dummy.

East won the trick with the queen and immediately returned
