Of course. unfortunately, five clubs cannot be made, due to the fact that most players would finesse the clubs and North's singleton king would make, or South may elect to open his singleton nce of hearts and then shift to a diamond. in which case South would get a heart raff.

The play to make four spades is not so difficult, as West's double more or less discloses the spade situation. On the face of it, it looks as if the declarer will have to lose two spadea, une diamond, and one club, but let's follow the play.

The Play

West opens the four of hearts, which declarer wins with the ace, He immediately lends back a small club, which West wing with the ace. The queen of hearts is played next and ruffed by the declarer..

A club is ruffed in dummy with the three of spades. A small heart is returned and ruffed with the five of spades. At this point declarer leads the eight of diamonds, West splits his honours and dummy wins the trick with the ace,

The jack of diamonds is returned, and West wins with the king. West returns a diamond and East discards a club when dummy's ten spot is played.

Declarer then returns a spade and goes right up with the ace to lead a club back and ruff. In dum- my. Now any card can be led from dummy, declarer trumping with the eight of spades, forcing West to trump with the jack,

Now declarer has the king-nine over West's queen-six. In. this manner West makes only one trump
