In to-day's band, East is con- fronted with quite a problem on the opening lead. South has bid spades. To open a spade might give the declarer a free finesse.

The queen and small is general- ly not a good short lend. However, in this caso it would have worked out very well, but when this hand was played, East opened his fourth best diamond--the five spot.

The declarer's next play should be the eight of diamonds. Now East, thinking that West has the queen, because of the play made by North, will play low and the dummy's ten spot will hold the trick, thereby giving declarer the opportunity to discard two of his losing cards on the ace and king of spades.
