There was surely good reason for hoping that this agreement would have made it clear to all that any lingering doubts as to Germany's equality of status which might still remain anywhere ought no longer to be entertained.

Washington, May 16. It is learned in authoritative quarters to-day that Great Britain and the United States will follow the example of Japan and raise the status of their diplomatie offices in China.

Japan and China have already agreed to exchange Ambassadors.

With reference to the suggestion that Great Bri- tain should take the lead in promoting immediate world currency stabilisation, Mr. Neville Chamberlain. Chancellor of the Exchequer, spoke at some length at the annual bankers' dinner in London to-night.

If there were to be a return to the gold standard, he said, it could only be by satisfactory settlement among the great countries. It was useless to anchor the ship if the anchorage was always shifting, he de- clared. It therefore seemed futile to attempt stabilisa- tion unless there were prospects of its permanency.

"Stabilisation is one of our ultimate objects. We shall continue with that end in view and shall not hesitate to act when it is likely that action will have a useful result," he added.-Reuter.
