NOTES FROM THE THEATRES

Anyone desiring to stay on friendly torms with Mona Barrie, acreon actress, must, among other things, be on time for any and all appointments. "It may be because I've always been on the stage", says the young actress whom Fox Film is pointing toward stardom, "where tardiness is n ́gin, but I cannot forgive anyone who dogs not keep appointments." Miss Barrio, who heads the cast of "Mystery Woman," a story especially purchaseil as a vehicle for her, anys she can for. give negligence in correspondence, bridge discussions and people who sing "The Man on the Flying Tra- peze", but persons who don't mean what they say, in making appoint- ments are definitely, off the list. In addition to Miss Hairie, the east of "Mystery Woman" includes Gilbert Roland, John Haillday, Rod LaRocque, Mischa Auor and Willam Faversham, The picture comes to the King's Thea- tre shortly. N

"Menace"

Te satisfy the demands of murder mystery fans, Paramount has just completed a new and exciting story of terror and mystery which, under the title of "Menace," opens to-day at the Alhambra Theatre. The cast features Gertrude Michael and Paul Cava- naugh, recently seen together!

[in "The Notorious Bophilo Lang." and John Lodge, Montagu Love and Henrietta Crossman. In "Menace," three people live under the death threat of a mad- man who tracks them from Africa to an isolated house high in the moun.. Lains of California. There.. they await the coming of their vowedl killer and, although the police have heen notified, realize that they along inst fore their unknown assailant, everpower him, save themselves from his mat revenge, BL the very hour at which the killer han promise to strike, unexpected guests arrive at the house. Within a few minutes, a note pinned by a dagger to the wal} announces that the killer is among them ready tu exact his revenge of depth. Suspicion and fear gripa all, and even before any action or plan can be put into effect, one of the party, an American adventurer, is found dend with 11 knife in his heart. Ralph Murphy, director of many excellent mystery pictures, is the director of "Blence" and he has given it the sinister background so essential to # picture of this type.

"Dude Ranger"

Exchanging the top hat and the dress suit for overalls, sardle and the role of Westerner, George O'Brien appears on the screen of the Oriental Theatre on Friday and Saturday in Zane Grey's "The Dude Ranger." This newest vehicle in as Western.un the setting sun-and just as colour. ful. Produced by Sol Leaner, "The Dude Ranger" will hold the auillenc to breathlessness, then relieved sus- pense with a crackling barrage of laughs. The manner 171 which the extravagance of the average "West- ern" is avoided in this picture attests the arrival of a new type of melo- drama. Nothing is lost of the old dramatic sequence of authentic thrills, charas anul gua-play, but all is accom plished in an atmosphere of dis- tinguished supporting cast consisting of Irene Hervey, Henry Hall, Leroy Mason, Alma Chester, Sid Saylor, Sid Jordon and Jim Mason is seen with the star, Edward F. Cline han "directed" the production with speed, virour and high suspense. He presents the humorous episoden with the skill of a master humanist.

"The Constant Nymph"
