LETTERS FROM EVE.

My Dear- feel almost too exhausted for words, although I suppose this.sticky dampness is merely a sign that summer is well on the way. It only seems a few weeks since Christmas-, doesn't, it ? Yes, I do intend to keep up my tennis at all costs, and possibly the odd game of golf if the body stands the strain.. One has to commence buying summer frocks and things now, and there are some very peppy materials these days. Shoes as well; although there is not nearly the trouble when buying coverings for one's pedal oxtremities-is there? We are lucky to have Gordon's in Hongkong, and I have seen a few advance samples of just the loveliest shoes imaginable. New fabrics and colours just too delightful. Take my advice, and don't leave your summer shoes too late, because as soon as people know they have all arrived, all the best will be snapped up. No dear, I do not think that I want a canary. The last one we had always made Bungho so irritable, for he would sit under the cage on the verandah, and then the seeds fell down his neck. See you soon, and don't forget to let me know about the matshed.

Laurel and Hardy To Separate

HARDY RETAINED

London, Mar. 19.

The world's most popular comedy team--Laurel and Hardy haa been dissolved. Mr. Hal Roach, the film producer, to whom they have been under contract. since they sprang to fame five years ago, has announced that Laurel'a con- tract will not be renewed. Hardy will be retained, Laurel said: "We were unable to agree on the torms of my contract, but I am murprised. at Roach's announce». ment."

Here is the inside story of the accidental partnership which made a fortune for all concerned. Stan Laurel the thin one said he had no immediate plans for the futuro. He has no need to. He is that rare thing- man who has made, a quick fortune out of Hollywood fame and kept his head. He is a wealthy man. Two years ngo when he visited Britain he was earning £600 a week. But he was the owner of his Hollywood home. And he had paid up an insurance which guarantees him for an fa- come of £25 a week for life. Ho sald then that he would be quite content to live on that for the rest of his life.

Washington.

The New Deal is working quietly to make the Civilian Conservation Corps the greatest peace tline army in America's history..

Detailed plans have been drawn to double the enrolment of the Corps, bringing its prenint strength to more than 600,000 men and making it about. five times the size of the regular army,

The plans are those of the Var Department and Mr. Robert H. Fechner, taciturn ex-labour leader, who has allowed his fellows in the Now Deal to garner publility while he spent $473,607,05846, dotted the country with 1701 strategically located camps, and enlisted 980,000 youths.

Present enrolment is steady at about 370,000 mon, incluling 50,000 drought relief recruita who will go off the payrolls on July first.

If President Roosevelt's York relief plana óbtain Congressonal approval, Mr. Fechner hoped to bring the enlistment to 041,000 this Spring, at a cost of slightly more than $1,000 por man per year, making his budget reth n grand total of $600,000,000 an- nually.

In his third report to Preident Roosevelt, to be made publicsson, Mr. Fechner will say he is having unusual success in rehabiliating not only of forests, but the men who do the work, Practicaly all are in excellent physical condition and nearly all are learning a rade, he will announce.
