WHY NOT GO TO CHURCH?
BUNGALOW-OWNERS
TOO BUSY
NO LANDLORD TO WORRY
By Evelyn Monro
Why do men and women no longer go to church? The recent series of wireless talks on "How I spend my Sundays" has brought out many startling and thought- provoking reasons, but a stay in
"Bungalow aren" suggests a enuse so important that it is sur- prising little preminence has so far been given to it.
It is, of course, recognised that the enormous increase in the num- ber of house occupied by their owners is presenting a new prob lem
with many aspects. It is generally accepted that such an inerenso is all to the good. Wo speak vaguely of added health and Better conditions, we dwell com- fortably on the greater stability of the nation, and, but for a few broken-hearted architects, we ap plaud this remarkable change that has taken place. -

For the laboratory on the second floor is occupied mainly by vipers, and the elderly lady who spends her life among them is said to discourage visitors by let- ting her pots romp about the room. There is one story that when the postauan made his traditional year- ly call for his New Year's tip, he opened the doar and found a tre- mendous bos behind it and since then no postman has taken the trouble to call at all.
The occupant of this laboratory Ix Mme. Cesaire Phisalix. Her husband, in 1888, discovered the antidote for the bite of a viper- the same snake's venom heated until its strength is lost, and then injected as an antitoxin. She is the author of "Veno. mons Animals and Poisons," the most complete work on the subject," and she is working now on what other medicinal uses may be found for the venom of vipers.
In this she is barking back to ancient mediche, for among the strange concoctions that ancient and medieval doctors forced down the throats of their patients, the flesh of vipers held an honoured
