The report, by Dr. William Duncan Strong of the American Bureau of Ethnology is a study of "Chorotegan": typo civilisation, which at the time of Columbus centred in

Spanish Honduras, Nicaragus, and Coatn Rien. Some archaeologists have sought to find in it the basis of the Maya civilisa tion of Yuentan and Guatemala, the highest achieved in the aboriginal New World and one of the highest evolved independently anywhere on earth. It was much cruder than the higher culture, but bears cer- tain general and perhaps basic re-: semblances to it. The findings of the Smithsonian expedition indicate that people of the Bay Islands had borrowed little from the nearby Maya, whereas the influence of the moro distant Coath Rican civilian- tlon was strong..

Dr. Strong gives detalled des- criptions of the art facts recovered and the sites explored, with the conclusion that the culture of the Bay Islands represents an extreme northern thrust of South American influence and that any final solu tion of the major problems of Cen- tral America must await more thorough exploration of the south- ern continent.
