WORLD MARCHING TOWARDS WAR

LANSBURY WARNING TO BRITAIN

GERMANY'S CHALLENGE MUST BE MET

(By Telegraph. Copyright. Telegraphic Messages Ordinance, 1804. Received, March 22, 1 p.m.)

London, March 22.

"We are marching towards war," declared Mr. George Lansbury, Labour Party chief and Opposition leader in the House of Commons, during the debate on the European crisis yesterday.

Germany has flung a challenge to the world, and he therefore demanded that Great Britain make a counter- challenge favouring the abandonment of aerial warfare everywhere.

"I want Britain to say she is willing to take her chance in an earnest endeavour to end this foul businessį of fighting from the sky.

From Rome it is learned that . Pope Pius is preparing an oneyell- cal analysing of the present political situation and renewing the plea

for peace.

PURCHASING SILVER WITH GOLD

MAY ARRANGE DEALING WITH NANKING

(SPECIAL TO “TELEGRAPH")

Washington, Mar. 21. The United States sales of gold to Mexico and Guatemala have now been revealed as an actual ex- change of American gold for silver.,

This revelation, coupled with the Treasury's will- ingness to sell gold to other nations, which could be paid for either in silver or commodities, has revived the conjecture that the United States will possibly exchange gold for Chinese silver.

It also appears as though the gold exchange policy. is a first step towards the Administration's desire for the establishment of a modified international gold standard in the interests of an internationally stable. currency.

Sir Malcolm Campbell will leave Dayton on Sunday.

The Treasury is worried over its polley, Bratly because it is seriously affecting foreign powers, and, secondly. It is neutralising United States' efforts to build up a silver reserve, which the Trea-

sury is making efforts to do with out disrupting the world's finan cini markets.

It is pointed out that the Trea- sury has purchased nearly 400,- 000,000 ounces of silver, since June, 1934.
