Patriotism

NATIONALISM. CAUSES WAR

By C. H. S. DUNCAN

"Patriotismo," says d well-known writer, "is it an instinct. It is an uttorly artifelal quality. "It has already brought the world, to. Its knees and caused untold-misory. Isn't it time we looked this cheat ing goddess in the face, and then turned our back on her for evar?”

This is a hard saying, 'ospecially. for Scots, who more than most pride themselves on their love of country.

The writer, like so many think- ing people at the present time, is dealing with the question of world peace: Nationalism, he suggests, has been the cause of wars in the past, and seems likely to enuse them again, unless it is checked in its more exuberant forms.

But patriotism. Surely this is a virtue above reproach? Are thinking people to turn thele back on love of country?

EUGENICS AND RELIGION

"A BRILLIANT. BORE"

Bernard Shaw's new play, "The Simpleton of the Unexpected Lales,"" had its world promlara in New York recently.

It is presented against magni- ficent, tropical settings, and is a bo- wildering medley of eugenics, roll- glon, and politics Intermingled with recurrent blasts of typical Shavian satire and humour (says the Daily Telegraph.)

At a tropical port in the British Empiro" the Governor of the Island and his wife, aided by an immigra- tion officer and a young woman tourist, collaborate with a native high priest and his wife in a unique eugenic experiment.

Four children-two boys and two girls who are the result, are so physically perfect and so shield- ed, through their upbringing, from the turmoil of the outer world that their joint parents hope they have founded a new, regenerated race.
