TELEPHONE COMPANY'S ANNUAL MEETING

Prospects of Hongkong soon being able to com- municate by radio-telephone with the outside world were referred to by the Hon. Mr. Gordon Mackle when addressing shareholders of the Hongkong Telephone Co., Ltd., at its annual meeting to-day.

Mr. Mackie mentioned that the Canton Govern- ment's radio telephone station enabling contact with Shanghai and other parts of China would be function- ing in October of this year, and stated that the prospect of Hongkong thus having an outlet with important centres in China and beyond was thus within measurable distance of being fulfilled.

In the course of his speech, Mr. Mackie suggested that representations should be made by the Company to the Hongkong Government for permission establish an Investment and Exchange Fluctuation Reserve.

Addressing shareholders, the Chair. man said: Before proceeding with the ordinary business of this meeting, I desire, on behalf of your Board, to place on record an expression of pro- found regret at the recent death of Mr. J. P. Warren. The Inte Mr. Warren joined the Board this Con- pany in 1930 and served theroon until, shortly before his death; during the period of office on your Directorate, Mr. Warren brought to bear much sound advice in the deliberations of your Board and his intimato knew- lodge of business and affairs proved Invaluable, not only to this, but to the many other Companies with which he was associated. His wine counsels aro indeed a loss to this Company and his passing engenders a genuine feeling of regret to his colleagues and to his numerous friends in the Colony.
