ESTATE TO GO

TO CROWN

The First Division of the Court of Session, Edinburgh, recently held that the testamentary, direc- tions of Miss Christina Mac kintosh, who died at Inverness in March, 1934, aged 60, wore' in- capable of legal fulfillment, and that her estate amounting to about £3,600, should pass to the Crown.

Mina Mickintosh, who left a holograph will, directed that all her means should go to the erec- tion of a grey granite vault, to be built above ground; that the bones of Mr. Robert Macadam and Mrs. Macadam, whom she called uncle and aunt, should be ex- humed from their grave in Tomnahurich Cemetery, Inverness, and reinterred in separate coffina beside her own remains. In the vault.

The Lord Advocate claimed the estate, on behalf of the Crown, stating that the project was of such an extravagant nature ns to be contrary to public policy.

Lord Clyde, Lord President, said that there was no doubt that in the law of Scotland testamentary provision for the erection of a memorial or monument to the-de- censed was perfectly valid. It did not appear to him to be unnatural or extravagant that Miss Mackin- tosh, who had been all alone in the world, should wish her re mains to rest alongside those of the only two people with whom she had any kind of affinity or connexion, but there was a point which presented formidable diff culty. He knew of no authority in the law of Scotland that a stranger had any right whatever. to dispose by testament, of the mortal remains of other people; and it followed if

indis- pensable part of the project could not be legally accomplished, then the whole project must go,

FOR WALKERS

CHISWICK HIGH ROAD SCHEME

PUSH-BUTTON CONTROL

The Minister of Transport has issued details of a scheme which has been evolved as a matter of urgency to deal with the exception: al 'dangera to pedestrians u Chiswick High Road.

The announcement stated that the Minister, impressed by the necessity of taking special "steps" to mitigate the danger of accidents in the road, had approved an ex- perimental scheme for the erection of pedestrian-operated

trainic signals in the thoroughfare. Ac cordingly he had decided to make A grant from the Road Fund to wards the cast of the signals, and the work would be put in hand at once as a matter of urgency,

The use of the pedestrian- operated signal has been approved by the Minister because of the large proportion of pedestrians killed or injured on this road, which is one of four London roads selected by him for special atten- tion. Five of the six persons kill- ed on the road during the six

were on foot.

Safety periods for pedestrians," during which all traffic signals show a red light simultaneously, ara already provided at a number of busy junctions in London, notably Trafalgar Square ant Hyde Park Corner, but they aro regulated by pedestrians only in

n

few exceptional cases. Tho selected positions in Chiswick High Road aro the junctions with Action Lane and Goldhawk Rond. Traffic signals word installed at the first of these Junctions just before Christmas. They wore of the vehicle-actuated type, which means that they are operated by the pressure of vehicles on detec- tor pads set in the carriageway.

"CROSS NOW"

The signale will now be altered to allow a safety period for walk- ers. On the London side of the junction special signal lights wil! face pedestrians, and push-buttons will be fitted to the posts. The signals will work in the normaal way until a pedestrian presees the button, when the traffic in tho main will be stopped. Tralle on the side road will not be released- until a pedestrian has had time to cross. During this safety period the pedestrian signals will show the words "Cross New In white lotters on n black' ground, and at all other times they will show the words "Don't Cross" in red letters. The Ministry

Urge that pedestrians should make use of this pash-button and obey the apecial signale.
