Now let us change the douce of diamonds to the deuce of hearts We have four spades, four hearts, four diamonds, and a singleton club. You can still bid a diamond,

hoping that your partner can bid one of the two mafors. If he bids two clubs, your hand still is strong will know that you have a four- enough to bid two spades, and ho card spade suit and a good hand.

Now us take hand No. 2: Be- fore opening the bid with this type of hand, you must say to yourself, "If I bid one diamond and my partner bids two clubs, my hand is not

strong enough to bid two spades, because when I bld two spaden-I-tell-my-partner-that--I have a streng hand and he can safely go to three diamonds, or if he has spade support ho can go to, three spades.

"But if I bid a diamond and my partner bids two clubs, I can safely sign the hand off by bidding two diamonds. However, If I bld a dia- mond and my partner bids heart,

I can bid a spade, and as this is still in the one zone, it will not show a big hand and the bidding will not get too high."

So, summing it all up, you will find that, if you bld a minor suit and then a major, and the second bid le in the two zone (for, ex- ample: one diamond, two clubs by partner, two spadea by you, which would force your partner to take you to three if he wants to sup port the first suit), you must have a strong hand. But if you open up with a minor sult (ono diamond by you, one heart by partner, one spade by you), this does not neces-
