(By Telegraph, Groyright. Telegraphio Mon magis Ordineses, 1884. Roostend, February 3271740).

New York, Feb. 17. The horror of stairs has galvanised the City authorities into action over a threatened strike of 200,000 liftmen and building servico employees, who are demanding higher wages. It is belloved the liftmon plan to walk out to-morrow at mid- night.

Mayor La Guardia is prepared to exorcise the broadest police powers under the city charter, which amounts almost to the pro- clamation of martial law.

if the lifts worn stopped in many of the sky-scrapers In Now York It would mean that thousands of persons would have to climb acores of storeya. A strike of thla sort, therefore, must be re- garded as a threat to the health and safety of millions of office and flat dwellers and store employees, as well, who would have to climb thousands of steps to their places of work or homes.

In the event of a strike every building will be guarded by police and remen.

The leaders of the strike rofuno to divulge the time for the walk- out, and every effort is being made to avert the strike by conference and compromise meanwhile. Reuter Spacial.

It is also reported that the Ministry is likely to approve of the resolution and that they will possibly announce the decision on Sunday, February 17, although this report has not been officially confirmed, says United Press.

It is said that such a move would constitute an in- vitation to foreign banks to import the white metal and thus serve to relieve the existing money tightness, especially British banks who are maintaining branch offices in Hongkong, although it is widely questioned whether the objective would be accomplished.
