His Excellency the Governor arrived just before noon, in time to see the second race.

The winner of the prize of over $63,000 in the big sweep on the Hongkong Derby is Mr. Leung Yuk-teng, of the Nam Tai Leung Rice firm.

Liberty Bay, the unbeatable, added to his laurels by the ease with which he won the Victoria Stakes, coming in six lengths abend of Cossack's Beauty, with King's Justice having to be satia- fied with third place.

There were no fewer than 27 ponies out in the Mongolian Stakes, the first race after the tifin Interval, in which Mr. L. G. Frost rode The Chetah to victory, thin being his fourth win for the day.

The first record to be broken at the Meeting was when Mr. D. S. L brought home Able Amazon' to win the Melbourne Cup, whose time for the distance was 4/5th second below the previous best.

A proposal to amalgamate two great South Wales coal companies, which would establlah the inrgest coal producing unit in the United Kingdom, was announced to-day.

The concerns are the Powell- Duffryn Steam Con! Company, Ltd., and the Walsh Anthracite Collieries-Ltd.---Their-annual-out- put of coal is at present over 11,000,000 tons, but the productive capacity of the two companies ex- coeds 20,000,000 tons.

London, Feb. 18. The News Chronicle states that complete plans to protect civilians against gas attacks from a possible enemy air force bent upon the destruction "of England, will be issued shortly.

The plans are in the hands of the Committee for Imperial De- fence and a vast organisation is envisioned which will function in the event of emergency.

Thousands of volunteers have. been enrolled or will be enrolled In the scheme.

The story of an alleged espionage plot in Germany, for which it is expected a number of prominent persons, including a Polish officer, Baron Sosnowsky, Baroness von Berg, Frau von Natzner and others, will die, was revealed here to-day following the trial of the accused before a secret People's Court.

The accused were charged with selling Germany's mobilisation plans to a foreign power, and were accused of high treason..

Some quarters believe Baroness von Borg and Frau Natzner will certainly be executed.
