J, L. MCPHERSON

Regret at the departure next year on retirement of Mr. J. L McPherson, M.DE, was expressed by Mr. J. W. C. Bonnar at the andual general meeting of seat holders of the Hongkong Union Church held in the Church Hall last night.

"I think there is none who has had the interest of the Church at heart more than he has", ha remarked. "We will be sorry to lose him and I don't know who Is going to take his place. He will also be missed in, the Colony.

He is going home to rejoin his wife and family and I wish him long life and happiness- in his retirement."

Replying, Mr. McPherson said he had been a member of the Union Church for nearly 30 years. He had had the op- portunity of serving in nearly every post. He earnestly hoped that the good work of the Church would go forward.

A social, followed by supper, was hold before the meeting.

GOVERNMENT REPLY CLEARS AIR

London, Feb. 15. "Neither moribund nor suicidal,

is the verdict of moderate critica on the Government's condition, following the debate on the So- cialist motion of cenaure.

The debate, it is felt, has gener- ally cleared the air, and dispelled the dispondency with which the woek opened.

Mr. Neville Chamberlain's fight- Ing speech helped immensely to rally the ranks, hearten the pessim- lats and dissipate the foreboding of a general election in the autumn.

"We are not going to run away as the people before us ran away," declared Mr. Walter Elliot,

"We do not intend to allow the forces which have done so much to bring the country through its difficulties to be split," said Mr. Showsbury.

Election not Pending Addressing the Constitutional Club, Mr. Thomas (Secretary of | Slate for the Dominions) poured acorn on the motion that the Gov- ernment was divided and that an election was impending. Ho bade his audience reflect on how a mere rumour of an impending, plection had caused chaos in 80% many cases and disaster to thousands of people.

Importance is attached to Mr. Winston Churchill's plain intima- tion, Inside and outside the House, that his opposition, to the India Bill does not imply, hostility to the aystom of national government. Certainly, he has no intention of aplitting the party,
