DERBY DAY'S RECORD RUN ON FAST TRACK

Brilliant weather, sharply contrasting with the conditions on the first day last year, favoured the opening of the Jockey Club's 1935 Meeting this morning. There was only a meagre attendance for the first two events, but later large crowds assembled to witness some thrilling sport.

"

Only eight backers succeeded in picking the win- ner of the first section of the Wongneichong Stakes, the opening event, in which Mr. Neugebaur steered Strathaird to victory and paid $344.30 for a win and $68.40 for a place. Another pony from the same stable, Strathnairn, came in third to pay $81.10 for a place.

Further good dividends were paid in the Maiden Stakes, Rosseau returning $157.40 for a win, whilst High Honour paid $143.40 for second place and Tam- many Hall $82.50 for third.

The course was decidedly on, the fast side, and in the first section of the Sydney Maiden Stakes, Dr. S. N, Chau's Derby Day. ridden by Mr. H. C. Pib, equalled the record for six fur longs, covering the distance in 1 min. 19.3/6 sec8,

(By_Telegraph. Copyright, Telegraphic Messages' - Ordinancs, 1894. Received, February 10, 8.15 am.)

Rome, Feb. 15. Nine men of the British Royal Air Force were killed when a big flying boat crashed on the slopes of Mount Peloritani, en route from Naples to Malta, to-day.

The machine belonged to a squadron of four "Short Singapore" four-engined boats, and was on a test flight to Singapore. It is a new type of craft, the United Press reports.

Earlier, Reuter had told a story of the tragedy. A peasant saw the whole affair and rushed with a dreadful story to the nearest post of Carabinieri.

It was from Messina that the tale of the eye-witness came. He was interviewed at the city by Reuter.
