DEFENCE
The U.S. Secretary of the COUNSEL'S
Treasury, Mr. Henry Morgen- thau, to-day, revealed that wide- spread operation of the Stabili estion Fund had avorted a sarious foreign exchange crisis during the past few weeks.
The Secretary Bald that the fund was used for the first timo on January 14, for the purchasą of foreign funds.
He did not reveal the extent of the operations, but said that he had succeeded in stabilising ex- change conditions.
Discussing the operations of the Stabilisation Fund the Secre- tary of the Treasury, Mr. Henry Morgenthau, said that the inter- national gold bullion standard upon which the United States money was now based, had ceased to operate for a time, and that: the stabilisation fund's resources were necessary to avoid too great a rise of the dollar
markets.
ACCUSATIONS CAUSE SENSATION
Flemington, Feb. 11-- Charging that the police had deliberately "planted" evidence in order to send Hauptmann to the electric chair, alleging that some of the Lindbergh servants had guilty knowledge of the kidnapping and that, in his belief, Hauptmann was entirely innocent of the charges against him, Mr. Edward Reilly, chief counsel for the defence in the Lindbergh baby murder trial, made a last appeal to the jury to-day,
Mr. Reilly's charges caused a sensation in the court.
