Saarbruecken, Jan. 14.

The first check of the plebiscite ballots was nearly concluded at midnight, and the predictions of observers at the scene of the counting were that the vote would give Germany an overwhelming majority.

Semi-officially it is hinted that the majority for a return of the Saar to the control of the Reich will be as high as 85 or 88 per cent.

Meanwhile, there are fears that serious incidents may develop as the Saar hears-the verdict of its people to-morrow. It is half feared that the Nazi element may become riotous and that there may be clashes with the Socialist, Communist or Catholic Fronts. The foreign troops on duty in the area are on the alert, however, and the authorities feel able to cope with any emergency.-United Press.

Happy Valley was the scene of a brilliant and colourful pageant this morning when His Excellency the Commander-in- Chief, Admiral Sir Frederic C. Dreyer, K.C.B., C.B.E., inspected a battalion of Naval and Royal Marine landing parties, and o naval howitzer battery.

The battalion, wearing heavy marching order, landed on the Praya and marched to the Racecourse where it was drawn up, under Capt, Errol Manners, Senior Naval Officer, to await the arrival of His Excoliency. Those taking part in the parade were as follow: "A" Company (240 men) from Kent and Suffolk; "B" Company (240 men) from Cornwall, Hermes, and Adventure; "C" Company (240 men) from 8th. Destroyer Flotilla: "D" Company (180 men) from Medway. Bruce, Falmouth, and 4th. Submarine Flotilla: "E" Company (180 men) from Royal Marines; "F" Company (18 to ench gun) Howitzer Battery of four guna.
