the United States this year will be Elinor Murdoch. She is the highest ranking woman player on the masters list and ranks 11th among the country's beat players. This year she had the distinction share quotations issued to-day: aria of winning the individual mastera championship.
At the national championship: tournament to be held in New York City the week of Dec. 10, Miss Murdoch and her teammates will be striving hard to win the women's team-of-four championship, which is being played for only the second Murdoch's time. One of Mias strong points is her defensive play.! The Play
Here's an interesting defensive hand which she played in a recent tourment. Miss Murdoch was sitting in the South position and her partner led a club in response | to her club bid. West was allowed to win the trick with the king. He returned the ten of diamonds, tak-1 ing the finesse, which Miss Mur- deel won with the king.
She next led the ace of clubs and North echoed out, by playing the three, which would leave West with and more club. As West did not lead a trump, it looked as though he tried to gut into dummy to take finesse, so Miss Murdoch return- ed the, nine of diamonds, West played low, North low and the trick was won in dummy with the
ace.
The deuce of spades was played, the queen finessed, and North won with the king. North returned a diamond. which Miss Murdocli trumped with the jack and she now! led the queen of clubs, which held.
Then the ten of clubs was played, which allowed North to make her trump and, of course, a heart trick | was won by Miss Murdoch with the| nce, thereby defeating the contract three tricks.
Today's Contract Problem The contract is four hearts by North. - Eust opens the five of clube. How should the hand be played to make yo
