Lord Greenway, who died recent ly at Romsey in his 78th year, did notable work for his country Chairman of the Anglo-Persian Oll Company during the War,

Ho had succeeded Lord Strath- cona in the Chairmanship of the company shortly before the out- break of the War. At that time the undertaking had nearly ex- hausted its capital, and the question had arinen whether it would be forced to sell its concession and plant to one of the foreign syndi entes which were anxious to acquire them.

In these circumstances Admiral Lord Fisher, who was President of the Royal Commission which had to advise the Government on oll supplies, privately told Bir Charles Greenway, as he was then, that the Navy must depend upon oil fuel and asked him to continue the work of the Anglo-Persian Company at all costs.

Sir Charles determined that in the interest of the country the in- depondence of the company, should be maintained, and it was largely due to the ovidenco he gave before the Royal Commission that the Government were induced to invest In the company the additional capital that was needed. The result was seen in the huge expansion of the company's work during the War and the invaluable services it was enabled to render to the Royal Navy by providing it with the oil, it needed.
