Prince's Plan To Eradicate Slum Evils

MASS PRODUCTION FOR HOUSING

APPEALS TO ARCHITECTS

The Prince of Wales recently put forward a plan for mans production of houses to cure the slum evil.

He made his proposal al he Guildhall at the centenary dinner of the Royal Inalitute of British Architects.

Addressing 2,000 distinguished arciutects and their wives, the Prince said:

“I`nak you to carry the principle over the of тляв production architecture and the building. trades.

"I am. convinced that is no other way will it be possible to raise the

living conditions of the

majority of our people.

"They should have better cond!- tions and they can have them by these monne.

"I am sure that the principles of ; mass production can be applied to housing, and I'am equally sure that! you can do it and that you will be able to overcome any barriers of prejudice that may exist.

The meanness of our twisting streets is the major cause of two great evils, the congestion of transportation on one hand, and our lack of civic pride on the other.

"You could develop the idea of widening the streets and raising the height of buildings so that they

din could be spaced at greater tanecs from each other.

"We should take a bigger and the more generous outlook planning of our cities following the trend of our times, which fa to have icse of the limited group of individuals and more of the national point of vlow."

The exercises held by the Shanghai Volunteer Corps presented a sight not to be seen in any other metropolia. Representative of nations which, a few years ago, were at war stood side by side ready to defend the city against an invader. Above are shown some of the many scenes from the day's activities.
