EMPIRE LISTENS TO MESSAGE OF HOPE

BRITISH CHEERS ECHO IN SAARBRUECKEN

(By Telegraph. Copyright, Telegraphic Messages Ordinance, 1804. Received, Der. 20, 9.15 a.m.)

London, Dec. 25.

His Majesty the King, broadcasting his Christmas message to the Empire, at 3 p.m. G.M.T. to-day, was heard by more people than any other man in history on an unprecedentedly wide radio relay. Not only did His Majesty's voice reach the farthest corners of the Empire on the five continents, but was received by ships on the seven seas.

His listeners were most impressed with His Majesty's appeal for Empire unity, for the meeting of the anxieties still facing the British peoples in a "restless and troubled world."

It was particularly noted that India was the only member-state of the Empire mentioned by name. His

greetings to that great nation were possibly significant the Bill enabling India's constitutional reform.

AVOID CONFLICT

(by Telegraph. Copyright, Telegraphic Messages Ordinance, 1894. Received, Dee. 26. 0.30 am.)

Rome, Dec. 25. The widely diffused rumours of war and armamenta increases were adding to the distress of an already difficult period, declared His Holiness Pope Pius, in an address broadcast from the Vatican to-day.

It is said, His Holiness declared, that if the world wanted peace it must prepare for war-as if one could only see in all these armaments a guarantee of peace.

"If peace is really desired," His Holiness went on, "we should pray for peace. But if there are any who, through a veritable suicidal or homicidal mania prefer war, then it is our duty to utter another prayer: namely, to disperse those peoples who want war."
