FIVE DAY WORK WEEK

"UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS"

NOTTINGHAM'S EXPERIMENT

"The working of the five days week has proved an unqualified success both from the business point of view and from that of the employocs, and I am satisfied that If continued over the winter months results will prove equally antis factory."

This statement aume up the con- clusions of Sir Richard Redmayne in his report, on the experimental working of the five daya week at Boot's Pure Drug Company, Not- tingham. The experiment lasted from April 30 last to Soptember 29.

A decision to continue per- manently the five days work at their Nottingham factory was an- nounced by Messrs. Boots Inst week, when Sir Richard Redmayne's report was considered by the board of the company.

The conclusions reached by Sir Richard, who was nominated by the Ministry of Labour as independent investigator, are summarised ny follows:-

"I am of the opinion that the cost In the aggregate has not been on- bartoed, and certainly there has been attained a higher efficiency on the part of the employees.

EMPLOYEES ENTHUSIASTIC

"The effect in regard to enhance- inent of health and contentment, regularity of attendance at work, and diminution of absenteeism have been very marked since the intro- duction of the five days week experiment. The employees them- selves are enthusiastic in regard to the experiment, and view with dis- may any suggestion of return to the five and a half days week.

"It is difficult to say how far the experiment is capable to being applied to other industrial con- cerns, because Messrs. Boots have the advantage of being distributors of the commodities they produce.

My opinion is that the experi- ment might be applied at Many works at large printing worka, for instance, and certainly at worke where production and distribution ara vested in the same concern, and where wages do not constitute a high proportion of the selling price. But each ease would have to hp, considered "on its merita.

On the question of overtime, Sir Richard says that he found that the directors and management held that it should be avoided whenever possible, and that it was only exensable when worked for short apolls. The reaction of employees to the craign for the elimination of overtime "was not aways good."

SOME MARVELS OF TELEPATHY

(Continued from Page 6.1 Inquire if some cases of alleged clairvoyance could not be traced to unconscious telepathy.

Let us imagine that an inquirer consults a clairvoyant or crystal- gazer with his mind full of some particular person. He is greatly Impressed when the secress dea- cribes that person nccurately-- "And she had never seen So-and-a in her life." It is conceivable- as Sir William Crookes would say that the Image of So-and-so has been unconsciously transferred to the clairvoyant from her ellent, by means of what, for want of a botter name, we must continue to call telepathy.
