CONTRACT BRIDGE

By W. E. McKenney

Here is the first of a scrien of aiz articles in which William E. McKenney explains some of the outstanding hands played by Aaron Frank, of Cleveland, one of the foremont contract 'players in America,

In the last two important tourna- ments of the American Bridge League, the name of Aaron Frank has played a prominent part. He was on the team that won the knockout team championship at Asbury Park. At the recent Na- tlonal Masters' Tournament, ho and his teammates gave the famous Jacoby, Burnstine, Schenken, Gott- Heb, and Frey combinalon a real hattle. Their loss can, however, be attributed to lack of experience.

by Frank, I will explain the hands as he told them to me.

Frank sat in the North and his regular partner, Jeff Glick, who has played with him in all the champ- ionship victories, was sitting in the South.

Glick and Frank use the one-over- one, except that they do not believe in opening the bidding with a four. i curd major suit. If they have a hand strong enough for an original bid and it contains only a four-card major, they prefer to open the bidding with an artiflelal ông club. bid,

Now, on the second round of bid- ding, when one shows his major sult, the partner knows it is a four- carder.

In explaining to-day's hand, Frank told me that he did not be- lieve championships were won by However, n spectacular plays. good player should be on the look- out for simple end plays.

He says most players take too many. finesses. If they fall, they blame their loss on hard luck. Many fiscases can be avoided by such play as he gives in to-day's hand,

The Play

The king of clubs was opened; followed by the ace, which Frank trumped with the eight of dia- monds. Three rounds of diamonds were taken and a spade led to dummy's king. Dummy's last club was played and trumped.

Frank could see that, if the spade ault would break, he could discard one of his losing hearts, so now he cashed the queen of spades and then led a small spade to dummy's ace. But East showed out.

The play is now simple: the fourth spade waa led. West played
