SCHOOL PRIZE DAY

TRIBUTE PAID TO WORK OF

MR. A. R. SUTHERLAND Appreciation of Mr. A. R. Sutherland's services to the Indian school and community were expressed by Mr. A. T. Hamilton, Headmaster of the Ella Kadoorie Indian School, and Mr. A. el Aretill, who presided at the annual prize-distribution of the school on Saturday morning.

Mr. Hamilton mentioned Mr. Suther- land's impending retirement and both speakers expressed best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland in their well- earned retirement.

A most satisfactory report of the year's work was read by Sr. Hamilton, and Mr. Arculli expressed congratula. tions to Mr. Hamilton and the sta on the excellent results.

The fallowing are extracts from re report:

At the Annual Examination 145 boys were examined and if prissel. Urdu is and always has been a very weak subject particularly with locat bora hoys. The language usually spoken by these boys in Chinese and they are consequently at a great dis advantage. To try and overesine this dimeult the Urdu syllabus has been considerably modified, new text books. introduced and the time-table altered whereby more time is devoted in this subject in every class, I feel sure that by next year I shall be able to report An improvement,

Need For Extension

Mention has been made in provinas reports about the pressing need for extension. I wish to emphasise this again. Year by year our numbers are increasing and aur enrolment of 175 this year is the highest in the history of the school. We are fortunate in having a well covered playground and spacious grounds which are utilized to the beat advantage when weather conditions are favourable but during the cold and wet weather our accom mination in severely inxed,

With the introduction of Kinder- garten our numbers increased, necessi. taling verlein changes in promises and equipment.

Thirty Toys enjoy the privilege of free tuition and on their behalf I wish to express gratitude to the donors. Mr. A. el Arrull and the Trustees

of the Ellis Kadorie Fund. In addition we have 5 boys holding Gioverament Scholarships. Our thunks are also dise to the inte Mr. Wa Hay-long for a scholarship tenable at Queen's College for 3 years,

In conclusion. I wish to thank most sincerely all the members of the staff for their loyal support and en-opera- tion during the year which, enabled the work of the school to be carried op se harmoningsly.

mentioned that the question of accom- modation was getting acute, and it was pinin now that It was urgently necessary more room should be found. Mfr. Areull,then congratulated the Headınnster' and staff on the year's excellent work, and also expressed appreciation of the good work done by Mr. M. A. Khan in the school before be joined Queen's College. The speaker said that it must be a matter of great pleasure to the Indian com- munity to know that boys after leaving; the school would be able to continue their studies in Urdu nt Queen's. College.

Leaving After 28 Years

After the prizes had been diss tributed. Mr. Hamilton referred to the pending retirement of Mr. A. R. Sutherland. Mr. Sutherland, he said. who had been in the Colony for 28 years, was retiring in February. Dur ing these years, Mr. Sutherland could look back with great pleasure on the, record of his service. Íle had been the Headmaster of the Indian School for a number of years béfore leaving to take up more important post in the Educa–, tion Department, where his devotion to duty een recognised by His Majesty the King, who had conferred on in the honour of the Timperial Service Order, He was sure they would all Join in wishing Mr. and Mrá, Sutherland ali joy and happiness in their well-earned retireinent,

Mr, Arculli, associating himself with Mr. Hamilton's remarks, spoke of the great appreciation in which Mr. Sutherland was held by the Indian community, an account of the work he had done for them both inside rund outside the school. Mr. Sutherland had been Headmaster of the sebon} for many years, and had done much mare that the share of any other Hendmaster towards the teaching and welfare of the bays. He taught them their lessons, and he taught them their sport, and most of all tnught them their duty towards other boys and their fellowinen. Even while in the Education Department, he did other work for the benefit of the boys! in the school.

On behalf of the members of the Endian community he would wish Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland a well-earned retirement, long life. guod health and everything they could wish for.
