FIRE'S AWFUL TOLL

GUESTS TRAPPED

IN HOTEL

LEAP FROM WINDOWS

Lansing, Dec. 11,

Roused from their sleep by the ominous cries of "Fire!" and driven into a state of panic by flames that leaped close around them, over 200 guests at the Kerns Hotel here struggled through fire. exits, fled down the stairs and so to the streets, leaped from windows into the ice- fringed river upon whose bank. the hotel stood, or perished. It is feared that fifty lives were lost.

Within a few hours of the out- break police had accounted for. 100 of approximately 200 guests' known to have been in the hotel at the time the outbreak occurred. But it was anticipated that many of those listed na missing would be found safe.
