with his particular research work.
The actual arctic flight started on July 28, 1031, from Leningrad. The airship had flown to that city. from Friedrichshafen with about two dozon aledges, a dozen tents and provisions for about four months on board for an àmergency, But this emergency never occurred. The Graf flow north.ovor the fog- covered Barents Sen to the Franz Joseph Islands where it descended on the water to exchange greet- ings and mail with the Russlan Icebreaker Malygin, anchored In a bay of Hooker Island. The ice, however, camo drifting up 80 rapidly toward the airship, rest- Ing like a graceful bird on the watern' of the arctic sea, that after a short quarter of an hour the ship had to take to the air again.
POLAR HEIGHTS
The most northerly point reach- ed was Cape Fligely (81' 50"). From there the airship spod at 100 kilometers (62.5 miles) an hour through the light polar night at a height of 1,000 meters (3,250 feet) along the northern rim of the world to Sovernnia Semila, an island little known. The island was reached in the morning and studied from the air. Then the homeward journey was begun,
After a three-day flight, begin- ning with the departure from Leningrad, the Graf innded in Ber lin straight from the arctic sea. In these 71 hours territory had been covered-and this with all personal comfort which it would have taken many months to traverse with aleigh and dog fenni. Many important corrections could be entered on the mapa.
In the following year, 1932, the South American service became Ormly established. Not less than nine regular flights to Brazil were made. In that year also tripa to' Holland and England and 17 cruises of Switzerland were sand- wiched in.
STEADY. SERVICE
In 1933, however, the airship was used almost exclusively on the trans-Atlantic route. Again nine lights were made to South America, but this time they did not terminate at the first Brazilian port reached; Pernambuco, as had been the case in previous yeara. The service was now extended down to tlo de Janeiro, prolong- ing the flight by another 24 hours. The outward-bound trip to Rio de Janeiro took about 4 days the return trip about 61⁄2 days. Fast steamships from Hamburg require 13 days for the single passage. The fare of the airship is some what higher, or 1,500 marks from Friedrichshafen to Rio de Janeiro, ns compared with 1,300 marks charged by the steamship com- panies,
The high degree of regularity which this service to South America has reached, placing it side by side with other more established transportation ays- tema, is seen from the fact that the last five lights were made at fortnightly intervals, and that on the whole the schedule was, ad- hered to as issued for the entire year in spring, not unlike the sail- ing Hats of steamers. On two con- secutive outward-bound trips, the time for crossing to Pernambuco differed only by two minutes on a voyage lasting three days,
Last year the airship covered 212,263 kilometers (132,658 miles) in 2,101 houra carrying 1,314 pas- sengers and roughly 8,000 kilo- grams (17.600 pounds) of mall and freight. The last flight was a tri- angulur cruise, taking the airship down to Rio de Janeiro, then up to Chicago and from there back to Europe. Such flights over enor moun distances, linking Europe with North and South America, are no longer regarded in the country of the Zeppelin airships na particularly outstanding events, Of the regular South American trips the press, in fact takes little notice now.
ACCEPTED
Thus the world is beginning to accept commercial airship services over oceans and continents as something normal, For many years Dr. Hugo Eckener has been working with untiring energy and courage for establishment
the
of airship communication as another means of dependable and comfort able transportation. By the end of last year the Graf Zeppelin had mado 886 fights, totaling 743,237 kilometers (464,688 miles), cover- ed in 7,842 hours and 51 minutes in the six years of ita existence. It bad carried 8,900 passengers apart from the crow, as well as 20,197 kilograms (44,488 pounds) of mail and 37,531 kilograma (82,568 pounds) of freight.
When Dr. Eckener's new ship, capable of accommodating 50 passengers on two decka; ana abaya the other, I ready this year, as anticipated, the world may hear of further progress through this now Instrument for bringing the na- tions closer together..."
