Rome, Dec. 7.

At least sixty Italian subjects have been killed and four hundred others wounded in a fierce outpost engage- ment fought between Italian Somaliland troops and settlers and a furious army of Abyssinian tribesmen.

According to reports reaching Rome to-day, the attack was directed against the town of Wallualual, and tribesmen pouring down upon it and killing indis- criminately any whom they encountered.

The fate of the naval negotiations in London now rests with Japan. The delegates are waiting for Tokyo's denunciation of the Washington Treaty which, for thir teen years, has been the main instrument of control of the world's naval shipbuilding. Everything depends upon the attitude shown by Japan when she denounces the Treaty.

Mr. Matsudaira, the Japanese Ambassador at London, told Sir John Simon that the Japanese note of denunciation would arrive in London some time next week.

The Ambassador also told Sir John Simon that the denuncia- tion would be accompanied by an exhaustiva aido memoirs sat- ting out Japan's reasons for taking this serious step and making suggestions for a new system of security to replace that which must go by the board with the old Treaty's termination in 1938.
