A successful application was made by Mr. T. P. K. Kemble before Mr. Schofield, at the Central Magis-"MACCLEBOIL" tracy this morning, for a review of the case of Vasily Gregory Gooseff, n Russian, who was sentenced to four months hard labour on Novem ber 26 for having returned from banishment..

Mr. Kemble said it seemed that defendant had not applied for a per- mit to pass through the Colony from Canton. If he had applied, he Įmight have received permission, Elis contence, therefore, seemed rather a stiff one, especially in view of the fact that he had been arrest- led on board the steamer, and had n (through ticket to Shanghai. The

offence was really a technicality.

Mr. Schofield agreed that the offence was a light one, but did not (agree it was a technicality. On ro- consideration, however, he would re- duce the sentence to two months* hard labour,
