ELEPHANTS IN GLASS HOUSE

The temporary elephant house at Whipsnade is to be supplanted by n very different and more chlorate structure designed by Mr. Lubet kin, of Messrs. Tecton, the firm of architects who have already identi fled themselves with modern zoo architecture, the penguin pond and the gorilla house in Regent's Park being typical examples of their work.

The new structure will consist of loose boxes of circular formation with open fronta, and divided from the public not by bars, but by a moat some 10 ft. wide and 6 ft. deep, filled with water. In winter the whole of the house's facade can be closed by a glass screen, giving the huge inmates the required pro- tection, whilst leaving them in full view of their admirers.

VALUABLE INDUSTRY

A now method of producing oll from coal--and producing it on si commercial basis-was demon. strated recently before a party of English and foreign visitors at the Cannock works of the National Coke and Oil Company.

Earl Howe, who joined the party after testing the now spirit og a Journey by road from London, told; them that his engine ran overy bit as well as it has ever run with any form of fuel ho has ever used. Captain E. W. Percival, who flew with it to Cannock from Grave- sond, and that his experience was very similar. The company heard also how the local omnibus ser- vices and others are using it with aurent gain in mileage.

What the visitors were seeing was described by Mr. Arnold S. Rowntree, a Director of the Com-' pany, as the birth of a plant and process which, if wisely worked and directed; may bring funda- mental changes in our social and industrial life. The difculties on which other processes have fallen down have been, he said, over- come; and not only has there been solved the problem of the economic production of motor spirit from coal, but also the economie pro- duction of smokeless fuel saleable at a low price.
