A claim that arsenic absorbod into growing hair cannot be re- moved by prolonged soaking, and that that can be made a basis for distinguishing between arsenic absorbed during life and arsenic resulting from external contamina- tion, is made by two doctors at the University of Edinburgh in a re- cont laxue of the British Medical Journal

The claim is made by Professor Sydney Smith, of the Department of Forensic Medicine of Edinburgh University, and his colleague, Mr. E. B. Hendry.

The presence and distribution of arsenfe in the hair, nails, and skin, 'the keratin tissues, it is pointed out, has been of major significance In many published cases,

They have found by careful experimenting that hair and naila soaked in an arsenical solution absorb arsenle In Increasing nmounts. In other words, both hair and nails exhibit preferential absorption and not merely surface absorption.

"The importance of this obseTVA- tion," the investigators claim. "can hardly be exaggerated, for it has been customary to consider n higher concentration of arsenic in the keratin tissues than in the vla cera as proof that the arsenic was haurbed by those tissues during life. That assumption is proved to i be false."
