FROM HAWKERS

How an unemployed Chinese im personated a police officer and, ex- urted notey from two hawkers was told in the Central Police Court thin morning, when Lee Chung- Iman, aged 29, pleaded guilty before

It was recounted by Detective- Sergeant Gowans that at 7 o'clock inst night defendant, stating him- self to be a detective, approached a woman hawker and asked if she had a licence. He then asked for ten rents with which to “drink ten." She gave him five copper cents. A district watchman observed this. The defendant then went up to a made hawker and grabbed hold of this carrying pose. 120 bemused him of having caused an obstruction.

Stating that he was a constable of the Emergency Unll, he demanded five cents, which the hawker pro- duced.

When arrested by the district watchman the defendant said:— "Everybody knows me, don't you?" When asked to produce his identification, he was unable to do 80 and wa laken to the Police Station.

Defendant had been in Hongkong for six months, being previously employed as a tea shop waiter and later as an odd-job carpenter.

A fine of $30, or three weeks' hard labour, was inflicted.
