THEATRES
The story of "Aunt Sally" tha brilliant "musical" which comes on Wednesday to the Queen's Theatre is concerned with a very confident Jady, Sally Bird, who tries to persuade Mike Kelly, a night club impressario, that she is the goods" for his cabaret. After many vicissitudes, shò poses as Mddle. Zare, a noted French artiste, and succeeds in getting an engage. nent which is thwarted when she is kidnapped by gangsters who hold up Mike for £6,000 as the price of her return. But Sally contrives to escape. returns to frustrate the crooks and to fall into the arms of the now- 'qdoring Miko. Cicely Courtneidgo i» the star of the picture as Sativ. | Al- ready among the "fans" she consider- ably enhances her reputation as an Incomparable mirth-provoker, The whole picture moves with an irresis- tible swing, snappy turns, ravishing spectacle, ting numbers and excru- ciatingly funny sequences combining to make. "Aunt Sally" · delightful entertainment. Queue up for thin 'one—it's worth it.
"By Whose Hand!" Taking your
herve around the corner and playing pit-a-pat with your heart boats, "By Whoon Hand?" Columbia mystery picture opened yesterday at the Alhambra Theatre.
difficult to conceive of moro dramatle action than is packed into this unusual fim, which is unfolded on a train bound for Frisco. Many strange and Interesting things tron- spire. The audience is kept on edgo every minute as the logical but utter- ly baffling plot unfolds-art then gets n final thrill in the surprise end- Ing. Ben Lyon, as Jimmy Hawley, a reporter, doesn't profess to be a detective, but his newspaper training han taught him enough "inside" stuff to enable him to trap a "killer," who has excaped from the penitentiary- and further unravel a string of mya- terlous happenings. Interesting per- formances are given by Nat Pendle ton, "Killer" Delmar, Kenneth Thomson, Dwight Frye and William Halligan. A delightful rourenco is charmingly enacted by Barbara Weeks and Ben Lyon. If you like your mystery films really mysterious, here's one made to order.
"Baltoms Up"
"Bottoms Up" is rare entertain ment. Buddy DeSylva has shown an admirable restraint in his use of songs in this romance, showing at the Oriental Theatre on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. There are four destin- ed to become him: "Waiting of the Gate for Kaly", "Tune On the Moon", "Little Did I Dream" and "I'm Throwin' My Love Away". John Boles is at his melodious best as the singing movie hero. Teamed with him is "Fat" Paterson, a charming English girl who can bath sing and nct. Comedy mles are capably handled by Spencer Tracy, Herbert Mundin, Sid Silvers and Hërry Green, Thelma Todd has a good opportunity as the villainess. The story pokes pleasant fun at the bluff of Holly- wood. Tracy, Silvera and Mundin help Miss Paterson put on a swell front so she can crash the golden gates of the movie capital. The fact that she succeeds when she gets in- alde and then falls in love with her movie hero helps the plot along to an -entertaining climax. ---
