Exsex too bas festival of thanks, the trial for the Dunmow fitch when every year on August Bank Holiday married couples go. to the little village to claim a flitch of bacon for having "repent- ed not in thought any time." The couple proved most harmonious takes home the bacon.
This custom has lost its origin in time. But tradition bas it to ba the tender story of a young ebe. long and straight of hair, and a lovely peasant girl. ine noble. man was one of the--young-Fitz- wallers. Passing through the village of Dunmow he was attract- ed by the blazing beauty of n peasant's daughter. He returned disguised as a peasant and worked upon the land. In thisguise he wooed and won. But at first he dared not tell his family of his attachment, for marriage so far below his rank might not be legalized. Eventually the two went together to the Prior of Dunmow. To him they told their atory, anying they had not repented but continued! "true in thought as when they joined hande in holy quire." The Prior not only gave Hammon of bacon as well, us them his blessing but also his token, And Fitzwalter and his bride went proudly to the young knight's Norman domain.
