TRIBUTE AT DINNER.

About 300 leading citizens.of. Bournemouth were present at the Municipal at A cumplimentary dinner to Sir Dan.

Proposing his health, the Mayor, Alderman J. R. Edgecombe, suid it would be dieult to say how much modern British music owed to him. By giving very many British composere an opportunity at a very important time in their careers, ht encouraged them when encourage- ment was scarce, and, undoubledly brought the ability of many now distinguished musicians 10 the notice at the public.

Sir Dan, in reply, referred to modern music with its new harmonie design and now orches trai effects. Ile said he thought the finest masterpieces of the great composers would long outinst the experimental music of to-day. which Ineked the fundamental factor of understanding for 90 per cent, of listeners-melody.

With regard to the future of music at Bournemoth, he said the Corporation were determined to keep up the town's prestige in that respect, and to give Mr. Richard Austin, his successor, every possible chance to do that.

Sir Hugh Allan, pronosing the toast of the County Borough of Bournemouth, sald Bournemouth was a shining example of what municipalities could do for music.
