FATHER v. FILM CO. GEORGETTE TRIMMING

A new "war" tas broken out in Hollywood. The cause in the amazing success of the five-year- old child star, Shirley Temple, in her first two films, "Girl in Pawn" and "Baby Take a Bow!"

During the past two months Shirley Tomple has become the cinema sensation of America. In. two weeks, "Baby Take a Bow!" earned £15,000 at a New York theatre, and in three weeks, also j in New York, "Girl in Pawn" earned £19,000.

These are phenomenal' aummer Agures, and it seems as if the film world after 14 years of waiting has discovered a chlid star with the samą degree of popilar appeal as Jackie Coogan, who is reputed to have earned £600,000 in the course of his career as a child actor,

Hitherto Shirley Temple has been paid £30 a week. The war heing waged at the moment (saye a Daily Mail correspondent) is to docide whether she will be paid £200 or £600 a week.

The two combatanta arc Fox Films ar Mr. George Temple, who is the father of the star and the manager of a bank in Los Angeles. Fox Filme, while admitting that the child has been a phenomenal success, claim that part of that! success is due to their own efforts, and maintain that their offer to raise the salary of Shirley Templa from £30 to £200 a week should satisfy all the parties concerned.

APPRECIATION. OF MUSIC

JAPAN'S TRIBUTE TO GERMANY

Viscount Ildemaro Konoye, the conductor of the new Tokyo Sym- phony Orchestra, has just publish- ed an account of the Impressions received by him during his recent. stay in Germany.

He describes, in an amusing way, how he was startled to and that the police officer of the Berlin police station where he registered his arrival remembered him from his provisha vialt to Germany. The two soon became engaged in a talk on matters musical, the officer being keenly interested and an ax- cellent 'cello player in the Police Orchestra,

Viscount Konoye emphasises the- passionate love of music through- out every section of the German people. Although the Germans, he writes, are less inusical tempera- mentally than the Slavs and South- ern Europeans, their knowledge and appreciation of good music is greater.

Herr Hitler, the writer goca on to say, is making great efforts to promote national German music jend-like all the other members of his "Cabinet of Young Men"-- often visits the opera house and is very fond of concerts.

The Viscount was especially glad to note the growing oppoaltion to Jazz music in Germany. Before SURPRISING facts about chew-the war, he added, there
