Former Prisoner In Role Of Messiah

DREADFUL YEARS IN CONFINEMENT

Paris, Sept. 23. Ulimo, the man who survived 20 blistering years on Devil's Island. la going back. But not alone; he goes with what he believes to be The Word. He thinks he's the Messiah, the second Christ.

The "affaire Ulimo" was the pensation of France in 1907, when the Dreyfus caso, began to settle down to the sort of routine which belongs. to-day to the Staviaky scandal.

M. Benjamin Charles Ulimo, 26-year-old naval onsign, scion of a respected Lyons Family, trapped as the writer of a letter offering to sell back French military accrots which had come into his possession. If they were not sought back, according to the letter, they would be sold to a foreign power.

. Ullmo admitted he had succumb- ed to temptation for the sake of Toulon beauty, one Lison Welch- "La Belle Lison". Having spent on her his personal fortune, which was considerable, he had risked dishonour to keep her affection,

The young naval offeer was sentenced to life banishment and aalled for Guyana July 17, 1908. Until 1923, or for fifteen years, he Ilved alone on a rock surrounded by shark-infested waters. The only men he saw were the guards who visited him twice a week.
