West opens the king of spades, CONSIGNEES' NOTICES. which South ends with the eight of trump. The nine of trump is overtaken in dumtny with the jack and a spade returned and ruffed with the ten of trump.

Declarer enters dummy again by playing the four of hearts and overtaking with the five. The third spade is ruffed, the three of trump Is overtaken in dummy with the six and the last spade rusted.

Now declarer plays a diamond, and here is where West's defence play comes in. West plays the jack of diamonds, the queen, hold ing the trick in the dummy.

The ace is cashed and West makes the Deschapelles' coup by throwing his king of diamonds on the nee, thereby creating an entry for partner with the ten of dia- monds, which will permit him to lead through declarer's ace-queen of clubs.
