BRITAIN GOES
NUDIST
CONVENTION. IN
THE ALTOGETHER
"WE ARE NOT FREAKS"
Nudists from all over' Britain Kathored secretly in London re cently for their ftrat national conference
With the exception of a low. I'ross representatives and the nudist themselves, nó one knew the venue of the gathering—a large bouse surrounded by a high wall.
Nudista arrived from no far afeld as Scotland; and there were mung groups from the North and Midlands
At the opening ceremony of the conference, held in the grounds, all the men and women members, with half a dozen exceptions, at or ny in complete nudity. Thar were addressed by the chairman and secretary, similarly unclothed,
The ages of the members ranged from elderly mon to a little girl of four.
Among the nudista present were a Non-conformist clergyman, sollei- tork, doctors, teachers, and other professional, men and wo men. There were also a Japaneяo and a one-legged man.
Consterntion was caused among the nudists when it was seen that a ladder had been placed ngalast the roof of the house and that a photographer was attempting to take a snap of the
scene. Im- mediately there were cries of "Destroy the plate," and "Gol down at once."
Eventually the ladder was re- moved, and the official photo- grapher was permitted to také a bird's eye view of the scene from an upper window of the house.
NOT FREAKS OR JOKES. Opening the conference, Mr. Hugh Shayler, the chairman. pointed out that this was the first national nudist conference and the Arst occasion that thu, Press had been invited to attend,
"We ask the Press to take the movement soriously he said. "We do not want to be looked upun as freaks or jokes. in the nudist movement we stand for every grade of society-perfect equality of the sexes, of all parties and all races. In this movemen! we go the whole hog."
During a long discussion on the practical problems of the move- mont, the chairman asked if any one were carrying a watch and so could tell them the time. The time eventually was supplied by a non-sunbather.
After the discussion the mon and women members walked about the large house in complete nudi- ty.
COMPLETE NUDITY. Aradiogram played-dance music in one of the rooms, and later in the evening the members organised games and performed physical exercises under
the direction of a
gymnast. In all instances complete nudity was observed.
woman
It did not require long for the nudists attending the conference to get up and complete their toilet. All the men had to do was to shave and the women to comb their hair. On this occasion there were no bathing slips or shorts, all the membera being completely nude.
The conference continued in fitful sunshine throughout the day. By lunchtime a cool breeze was blowing, and some of the nudists were obviously feeling that conditions were on the chilly side.
GROWING CULT.
or
It would be a great exaggeration to say that this movement has reached any substantial propor- tions in Britain, but there is no doubt that it is slowly gaining adherents in the South, and a fair number of London business professional men How make a habit of taking their wives and families to sun-bathing centres at the week-ends, whore outdoor re- creations and swimming are in dulged in with a minimum of clothing, or, na seems to be the Increasing practice, no clothing at ail.
So far as can be ascertained, the strictest propriety is observed by all the socletion now engaged In the movement, and the only obstacle to converting the average man-in-the-street would appear to be the difficulty of persuading him that all the high fences, member- ship cards, and elaborate mystery surrounding nudism are really necessary for his health when in the country or at the const he can, In a backless bathing costume or Home other abbreviated attire, enjoy practically the same free dom for aun-bathing or sport at much less trouble to himself and everybody else.
