BROTHER OF BABIES IN POLITICS
(Continued from Page 3.) viewed in Rome with grave mis- triving.
In England, on the other hand, where the birth rate in 1932 was 10.8 per 1,000 and the mortality rate 123 the authorities proicss no undue anxiety, although an actual decrease in population is expected within a few years if the birth rate continues to decline.
1934.
The largest population in the world is that of China, with about 450,000,000 inhabitants. Reliable otatistics are lacking, but some authorities, including the Mari- time Customs, put the total a good deal higher. Next to China comea India with about 360,000,000. Of the continents, Asia, with 1,105,- 000,000 inhabitants, has the larg cat population and Europe with 475,000,000, is most densely popu- lated. North America has 135,- 000,000. Africa, where statistics exist only for a small area, is estimanted to have 148,000,000. Some students of vital statistics serave future danger to the white races from the enormous numerical preponderance of the Asiatic yellows and browns.
•
*
It is difficult to compute with any accuracy the trend of popu lation in the past. Wara, pesti- lence and famine were a constant check on natural incrense. So was infant mortality which is still asorious, though happily, a din inishing, factor. But, how far deliberate birth control was prac- ticed in bygone ages cannot be determined. Moreover, of some 6.000 years. of recorded history there are also thousands for which no record exists.

Even when taken, statistics in the past frequently fell very far short of a comprehensive survey. Thus, the famous English Domes- day Book indicates a population of Shanghal 281.212 Inhabitants.
