DEATH OF FAMOUS CRICKETER

Frank Field, Warwick Trundler

E. Field, The death of Frank which occurred last month at his home at Droitwich, at the age of 58 recalls the best period of Warwickshire.

Playing first for the county in 1897 Field steadily improved as a fast bowler, but not until 1908, at the age of 82, did he accomplish anything out of the ordinary Then he took 100 wickets in county matches at a cost of 20 runs aplece, and three years later, in company with his captain, F. R. Foster, he played a leading part in carrying off the championship-the only time that this high honour has fallen to Warwickshire.

Proving slightly more effective than did Foster, Field took 122 wickets at 10 runs apiece in cham- plonship matches. Rather above medium-height, Field's spin made him very fast off the pitch, and in

the hot season in 1911 the dry turf aulted his style perfectly.

Altogether in first-class cricket he took 1,024 wickets at a coat of 23 runs each. In recent years he acted as a first-class umpire, but
