NOTED MUSICIAN DEAD

SIR G. HENSCHEL PASSES

London, Sept. 10. The death is announced of Sir George Henschel, who won much fame as a singer, pianist, com- poser and conductor.

Born at Breslau, Gertanny, in Feb., 1850, Sir George lenschel received his musical education at the Leipzig Conservatoire and in Berlin. It was, as a pianist that he made his first public appear ance in 1862, when he played Wober's Concerto. But in 1868 he made his debut at Leipzig as a baritone singer and won a great reputation ns an interpreter of German Lieder.

NATURALISED IN ENGLAND.

In 1877, he visited Londen where his singing aroused enthu slusm. Next year he settled in England, becoming a naturalised Englishman in 1890. He was the first conductor of three of the biggest in the world. bike orchestra, he conducted the Beston Symphony Orchestra in 1886 he founded the London Symphony Orchestra and conduct- ed it for 11 years without any remuneration. the Continent and America until 1884, Her death in 1901 ended an ideal artistic and domestic partnership. After that he went into retirement for 8 years, living at Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands. In 1907, however, he married Amy Loule, an American, and in 1909 return-: od to public life, conducting and. giving singing lessons. For two seasons he conducted the Handel' Society of London. Retiring in 1914, when he was knighted, he settled at Aviemore.

FINE ARTIST. He was a splendid artist with n fine sense of style and

a great exponent of the songs of Schübert And of Brahms with whom he was well aequainted. He had also been a friend of Wagner, Liszt, Verd! and Rubinstein. in 1928 he omerged from his 14 years' re- tirement, giving a delightful song rocital at the London Arts Theatre Club. Although he was 78, he seemed to be almost untouched by time, singing with the spirit and vigour of a young inan. His wonderful voice still retained its charm. In 1929 he gave a series of Lieder concerts on the wire- leas.

In his 80th year he looked like

a man of 50 and still felt young,. tramping for miles every day, while the rest of his time was spent in teaching and in his hobby

He composed a number of songs and choruses and much chamber music. His worka niso included the operas "Nabia" (Dresden, 1899), "Friedrich der Schone" and "A Sea Chango", also known na "Love's Stowaway" (1884), n Te Deum", a requiem mass, a Stabat Mater first given at Blr- mingham in 1894, incidental music for Tree's revival of "Hamlet" in 1891 and a "Zigounor Serenade.” -Reuter and Special.
