FOREST FIRE.

HEAVY DAMAGE IN CALIFORNIA

Portola, Cal., Aug. 21. Four thousand men are battling against one of the worst forcat fires in years, which broke out in the Plumas National Forest and spread rapidly on a ten-mile front. The lumber towns of Sloat and Twin. Rivera aro menaced by the blaze and have been left deserted by the inhabitants.

It is estimated that during the past two days, the fire has burnt 1.500 acres of virgin timber and

6,000 acres of brushland.

The Quincy Lumber Company estimates Ita loss up to the present at 176,000,000 cubic feet of timber.

First sensational reports in- diented that terrible tragedy hnd descended on California. It was stated that two men had been burnt to death and that little hope was held out for. sixty others missing, who were believed to have been trapped by the flames.

A comprehensive survey of the situation by a United Press repre- sentative revealed that none had been burnt and all fire fighters had been accounted for.

The reports of men missing were attributed to panic-stricken workers, fleeing from the fire. *-
