Now let us stop to consider the hand from East's standpoint. His great fear is that he will be forced eventually to lead into that club tenace of dummy's. Therefore, his first move should be to get the aca. of diamonds out of his hand. His next move is to knock out dummy's aces.

If he plays a small heart, the declarer will win with the ace, pick up the trump, ruff u`dia- mend, and throw him back into the lead by playing the Jack of hearts, forcing him to lead into the club tenace.
