Actions have been raised in the Court of Session against Eric Linklater, Dounby, Orkney, the author of a novel entitled "Magnus Merriman," and against Jonathan Capo (Ltd.), 30 Bedford Square,

for £1,000 damages each for alleged elander.

Both cases are at the instance of Mr. Gwendoline Meacham or Cuthbert, 1 Balcarres Street, Edinburgh, who in public life is known by the pseudonym of "Wendy Vood," and she complains of a passage in Mr. Linklater's novel which she alleges refers to her.

The pursuer states that she has beon associated with the Scottish Nationalist Movement since 1913. and as Wendy. Wood is chairman of the Democratic Scottish Self- Government Organisation, found- ed in 1932 and consisting of about 2,000 Se

000 Scottish Nationalists. She is also an author and has readers in Scotland and elsewhere.

The Organisation holds that the Treaty of Union of 1707 has already been broken, and that Scotland is free of it. The object of the organian- tion is the political and economic severance of Scotland from Eng- Band.

REMOVAL OF STIRLING FLAG

Mr. Linklater, who was intro- duced to the pursuer in 1933, was Parliamentary candidate for East Fife in the Scottish National in-: terest in February 1933. The pur- auor was asked by the Scottish Nationalist party organiser to assist Mr. Linkinter In East Fife, but she declined to do so on the ground that his policy with regard to Scottish self-government was too weak,

During the celebration of Ban- nockburn in June 1932 a party, of whom pursuer was the lender, removed the Union Jack from Stirling Castle flag-staff, and. after rolling it up, threw it to the guard at the Castle. Her action received a wide publicity in the newspapers and otherwise, but the fact that she had rolled up the flag and given it to the guard did

receive publicity.

The Democratic Scottish Self- Government Organisation WAS founded as the result of the in- cident.

Cut paper patterns of the bodico and copè collar, as shown in the diagram. See that the neck is cut in a becoming Vin front, and be sure to allow for turnings. Tack the patterna, try on, make any necessary alterations, and cut the material by the currected

The skirt is merely two straight strips of material, joined at The sides, and gathered on to the bodice. Allow for a two-inch hem when cutting the skirt. The amall aketch skais the garment being made up.

Attach the collar to the in- wide of the neck edge, and face with a bien strip of material.

The remnants of volle may be joined together, gathered slightly, and used for the frill on the collar.

PICTURES THAT

PLEASED

Details of the survey of the world cinema market just made by a great American producing or- ganisation are given by a corres- pondent of the Daily Telegraph.

He points out that three of the facts brought out in the survey are that Enstern Canada is not interested in any of the Barry- mores, China' boa no use for Harald Lloyd since ho fought a Chinese in "Welcome Danger," and the charms of Mae West aro just beginning to register in Alexandria and the Panama Re- public.

Another discovery is that there is scarcely a eily or territory in the United States where the lilies and languours of virtue do not sell better at the box-office than the roses and raptures of vico.

The one exception in America la Mae West. For the rest, the vamps and portrayers of flaming youth-even. Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer, and more distin guished practitioners still like Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich -are less popular than such em- bodiments of rectitudo as Mario Dressler, Janet Gaynor, and Ann Harding.

Taking the United States ns a. whole we read that "musicals are popular when done with restraint, but that Hollywood injures itself with its cyclos; that good-looking women and beautiful clothes are what the customera desire to gaze upon when used in strong stories; and that sex can be handled in a pleasing fashion, and not objectionable when done with good tuate."

THE BARRYMORES. Canada's taste is anid to be American rather than English. In Montreal, "Queen Christina," "Little Women," "The Gold Dig- gers," "Henry VIII. "I'm No Angel," "Roman Scandals." "Lady for a Day," and "Flying Down to Kio," were the most popular pic- lures of the year.

Toronto reports much the same selection, adding:-"Gaynor, Gar- bo, Shearer, Gable, and Dressler are popular, Robert Montgomery hna slipped a little, the Barry- mores aro no draw, and Mas West IA great favourite.

The London figures, covering, only six months, indicated that of the first eight pictures, four wore English-Henry VIII. "I Was a and four American-"Paddy the Spy," "Aunt Sally," "Jack Ahoy": Next Heat Thing," "Dinner at Eight," "The Invisible Man," and "Fra
