MISER'S HOARD.

POT OF MONEY IN. TEMPLE GROUND

Thirty years ago a Chungshan native, known as Sap Pat, became the keeper of the centuries old Ngaw Wong Temple in Tsingyuan district near Canton, says the Canton Gazette. Sap Pat, whose arm was crippled, was a miser by nature, and hoarded every coin given by worshippers at the Tam- ple. He accumulated over ten thousand dollars, which he buried. in the ground somewhere near the Temple.

SACRED GROUND?

RIGHTS OF POLICE IN UNIVERSITY COLLEGES

Londen, July 24. The right of the Univeralty Colleges to refuse admission to pollee without a search warrant is being fought out in the Courts. The fight started in the Cambridge Court to-day when the Dean of Pembroke College, the Rev. Dr." Harold Wynn and his.. asaltant tutor, Mr. A. L. Attwater, were halled before the magistrates.

"realsting

The chargu WHA police officers in the execution of their duty" on the Bump Supper night of June 9, the final night of the Cambridge May bumping

races.

The police sought to enter the college after bottles had been thrown from windows. The de- fendants requested

that the

matter be left to the college au- thorities, and attemeted to prevent the police from entering.

The magistrates decided by a majority to fine Mr. Attwater a sovereign and dismissed the cass ngainst Dr. Wynn.

The prosecution was granted twenty-five guineas costs.

GERMAN ECONOMIES LARGELY TO BLAME

London, July 24.

A sharp fall in the price of cop. per to-day, coming after the re- cent weakness and despite the re- duction of the surplus stocks dur- ing the first half of the year, is attributed partly to the unsatis factory conditions in Germany,

These conditions, the slashing of all German imports of materials to the barest minimum, is inducing American Interesta to dump the surplus of their produc- tion on the London market.

COLONY QUOTAS

OFFICIAL OPINION TO BE SOUGHT

London, July_24. Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister, Secre tary of State for the Colonies, de- clared to-day that the Governor of Hongkong would be asked to cont sider the possibility of instituting n "through ticket system" for cot- ton piece goods, so that any anti- Japanese quote might be applied only to goods for Hongkong con- sumption.

This system it was suggested, would allow the free passage of cotton piece goods through the Colony. If they were destined for consumption elsewhere, and thus would not affect or hamper in any way Hongkong's trade.-Our Own Correspondent,

Hammersley's Query.

London, July 24.

Mr. S. S. Hammersley. Unionist member in the House of Commons to-day asked the Secretary for the Colonies, whether he would con Bider the Introduction of a through-ticket system for cotton

pleco goods exported to the Far East via Hongkong, in order that Hongkong herself might adopt the anti-foreign quotas,

In that way, he said, quotas can be put upon imports intended for domestic consumption without in- terference with entrepot trade.

Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister point- ed out that the trade position of. Hongkong presented exceptional difficulties in this matter, and the amount of her retained imports were relatively small.

"But I shall ask the Governor's considered opinion," Sir Philip added. Reuter.

The position is not likely to im- prove, it is felt, unless the Unit- ed States lessens the pressure of American copper sales in the Lon- don market and there is a revival, however slight, in continental buy- ing, under the load of Germany. Reuter.

Throughout the night scores of machines, big, boavy, multi-engin- ed attackers, and swift, single- senter pursuit ships, soared; dron- jug.

London. From the. ground stations, 150 batteries of searchlights awept the sky con- tinually and the defenders fought until dawn. It was a wonderful spectacle.

It appeared to interested Lon- don observers that many of the raiding bombers. successfully penetrated the defences and drop- ped their missiles upon their tar gots.

The official umpires, however; have not yet announced their decision. The manoeuvres aro continuing until Friday, 'and only then will London know Its fate.

Omeial Reports.

An Air Ministry narrative of the air manoeuvrca reveals con- siderable success on the part of the "Southland" planes attacking *London.

For example, threo squadron of 36 machines which spectacularly attacked the Air Ministry an hour after tha, open- ing of operations, reached their target unintercepted and theoreti cally bombed the Ministry from 6,000 feet.

The atores depot of Kidbrooke, West India docks, suffered from severe bombardment.

:

On the other hand, out of thirty- nine raids carried out by the Southland night bombers earlier,. thirty-three ·were intercepted, though 20 hits were recorded. —
