BLAST SET OFF IN MINE MOUTH
WORKERS ESCAPE AWFUL DEATH
Springfield, July B.. Men of a rival union sought to kill or bury aliye 360 mine work- era near hero to-day.
Their act of dreadful vengeance starts another chapter in the his- tory of the Illinofa. miners' war, which has raged for two years without cesnation, but with vary ing fortunes and waxing and waning of hostilities.
This latest attack is likely to re- kindle what was thought to be a dying dispute.
A gang of miners piled dynamite at the mouth of the air shaft and the blast was set off while some 850 men were working under- ground. The air shaft was com pletely wrecked.
Octals of the mine, issued a statement later in which it was de clared that there had been no Casualties and that all those who had been working in the mino had been accounted for.
The fact that the miners escap. ed, however, was only 'due to the failure of the explosion to reach the lovel at which they were labour. ing. There were no explosions in the mine itself nor were any fires started.
The damage, officials estimated, would be in the neighbourhood of U.S. $15,000,
The dispute purely a matter of Union rivalry, is between men of the United Mine Workers Union and the Progressive Workers Asso- clation. On two occasions in ro cent enths National Guardsmen have been called to this vicinity to take a hand in the affair. Thore havo bodn lives lost on both sides, but latterly it was supposed that a truce rad been estabilaked.- United Press.
Quiet Restored.
Sun Francisco, July 8.. Quiet prevails along the water- front.
The National Guard, "while using no more force than is noces. sary," threatens to use bayonets and bullets, and eyen machine guns, in the event of a recurrence of the disorders.
The Longshoremen are pressing for a general strike)
Labour troubles of varying de grees of gravity are also report- ed from Oklahoma City, Minnen- polis, Philadelphia and other cen- tres.-Reuter.

Jackson, Mich, July.8. The Republican Party opened its Roosevelt campaign to oust the Administration at a meeting day on the Identical spot where the party's first convention was held in 1854.
Speakers bitterly attacked the present
Administration's gramme. They declared that it by no means followed the platform on which the Democrats successfully appealed to the nation at the last election.
pro-
Senator, Fletcher sounded the key-note of the party's chorus when he urged the renewal of constitu- tional government instead of the socialistic system at present in use nt Washington.
The party plans
to attempt
મ
rally with Senator Borah in an
attempt to restore constitutiona
rule.
It is proposed to commence
鐘
drive to raise $1,000,000 for a cam-. palgn fund for 1934 and 1935 and also to retire the present party budget defeit of $208,000 before September.
From Washington, the Adminia- tration, through Senator Lewis of Illinois, issued a message coincid- ine with the Republican attacks, pledging itself to cooperation with business in "the promotion of general prosperity in all branches of Industry."-United Press,
N.R.A. Revision
London, July 7. An Associated Press copyright | story says the Administration is authoritatively reported be planning to supplant the N.R.A. by a strictly regulated system of self-government for industry.
to
The Codes would be closely supervisad by the Federal Govorn ment, and would be a permanent feature of industrial life.
The proposals, initiated by the National Recovery Administrator, General Hugh Johnson, were sent to President Roosevelt, who re- turned them to General Johnson for rovision.
General, Johnson la reported to be paying partlculor attention to the monopolistic charges against the N.R.A. with a view to the pro-i vention of an unjustified rise in prices.
A Hcensing system would re- place the Sherman Anti-Trust Act which is under auspension.-- Router.
