FRED PERRY POOR

London, July 2,

It is now revealed that "Bunny Austin had wonderful opportunities of beating Frank Shields in the Wimbledon quar- ter-final, but that the Ameri. can's great fighting spirit pulled him out of two extreme- ly tight corners.

In the final set Austin was within two points of the match on his own service at 5-4, und then collapsed.

At one sluge he took a 3-1 lend, in the third set.

According to a Reuter mesange, Austin was superb in the first two sets which he won at 6-4, 6-2, lên- ving Shields dazzled with his driving and volleying. The Eng Hahman gave every indication of Another straight sets victory when) he went to 3-1 in the third sot, but Shields staged an amazing rally. He spected up the play and forced Austin into errors.

Saving the act at 7-5, he quickly captured the fourth at 6-2, Austin abelously saving himself for the bigger effort.

It looked as though Austin would yet win. He went to a 5-1 lead to the final set and

had 30-love on his own service. Then Shields scored points with brilliant drop shots, and in final game, acad the Englishman to win a dramatic victory.
